If your window air conditioner won t turn on it may be that it is not getting any power. Window ac not cooling a window or room air conditioner that doesn t cool may need to be recharged with refrigerant but the chances are good it simply needs to be cleaned. No matter which type of air conditioner you have a clogged filter restricts airflow decreasing efficiency and reducing the ability to effectively cool the air. Also this same information applies to through the wall air conditioners which are basically the same thing as window ac units.

If you haven t cleaned the filter. The first step in cleaning or repairs will be to at least partially disassemble the air conditioner. If that is the case fix it by replacing the fuse wire. For wall and window air conditioners check the angle at which the unit is installed.

Make sure that the unit is plugged in and your thermostat is set properly. The unit must tilt toward the outside from at least 1 4 to 1 2 inch in order to properly drain condensation from the base pan to the outside. A window air conditioner won t turn on if the fuse of the main power source to the unit has blown. Too many btus means you could be using more energy than you actually need.

If your air conditioner isn t turning on first check your unit outside to determine if the condenser is running. Once the fuse has been replaced check the machine by running it again. Too few btus means your unit has to work harder. In hot humid weather that s normal as long as it only forms while the unit is working.

In cool weather usually 60 degrees or less an air conditioner can freeze up causing the unit to leak water when it melts which is also normal. If the fuse burns out again provide a dedicated 120 volt plug for the unit. The major difference is that you can install them inside a wall as a way to free up your window. If it s leaking in other circumstances try cleaning or replacing your air filters.
